What is Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)?

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin in a family of compounds that includes vitamins D1, D2, and D3.Cholecalciferol, also known as vitamin D3 and colecalciferol, is a type of vitamin D that is made by the skin when exposed to UV-B light; it is found in some foods and can be taken as a dietary supplement.Vitamin D comes in two forms: D2 and D3. D2 (ergocalciferol) comes from plants. D3 (cholecalciferol) comes from animals or plants like lichen.

What kind of Vitamin D is in “Hello Sunshine” Vitamin mini patches?

We use vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) extracted from vegan sources.

What is K2?

Vitamin K2 plays a vital role in many functions of your body, including blood clotting. It also protects the health of your heart and keeps your bones strong.

While vitamin D3 helps your body absorb more calcium, vitamin K2 helps your body transport it to your bones and teeth rather than letting it sit in your arteries and other soft tissues in your body. This not only helps to promote bone health, but it also helps to keep your heart healthy as well.

Why does HELLO SUNSHINE have D3 and K2?

These two vitamins have a ‘Batman and Robin’ effect: they’re good on their own, but even better together. Both vitamins are fat-soluble and work together to metabolize calcium in your body by activating helpful proteins.

How does your body make Vitamin D?

The sun's energy turns a chemical in your skin into vitamin D3, which is carried to your liver and then your kidneys to transform it to active vitamin D.

How much sun is needed to prevent Vitamin D deficiency?

Studies show that twenty minutes of sunshine daily with over 40% of skin exposed is required to prevent vitamin D deficiency.[4] Cutaneous synthesis of vitamin D declines with aging.

Melanin-rich people have less cutaneous vitamin D synthesis. Decreased exposure to the sun, as seen in individuals who are institutionalized or have prolonged hospitalizations, can also lead to vitamin D deficiency. [5] Effective sun exposure is decreased in individuals who use sunscreens consistently.

Are barrière patches FDA approved?

No vitamins or supplements of any kind are approved by the FDA. Vitamin patches are considered vitamins and supplements and do not require FDA approval. Our patches are made in a U.K. facility that is registered with the M.H.R.A. and is ISO 9001 certified. We also use third party testing partners to ensure what is in our patches matches our dosage.

What Is Vitamin D Deficiency?

Vitamin D deficiency is a global public health issue. About 1 billion people worldwide have vitamin D deficiency, while 50% of the population has vitamin D insufficiency.[1]

  • The prevalence of patients with vitamin D deficiency is highest in the elderly, obese patients, nursing home residents, and hospitalized patients. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was 35% higher in obese subjects irrespective of latitude and age.[7] In the United States, about 50% to 60% of nursing home residents and hospitalized patients had vitamin D deficiency. [8][9]
  • Vitamin D deficiency may be related to populations who have higher skin melanin content and who use extensive skin coverage, particularly in Middle Eastern countries.
  • In the United States, 47% of African American infants and 56% of Caucasian infants have vitamin D deficiency, while over 90% of infants in Iran, Turkey, and India have vitamin D deficiency.
  • In the adult population, 35% of adults in the United States are vitamin D deficient whereas over 80% of adults in Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh are Vitamin D deficient.
  • In the United States, 61% of the elderly population is vitamin D deficient whereas 90% in Turkey, 96% in India, 72% in Pakistan, and 67% in Iran were vitamin D deficient.[10]
  • An estimated 200 million Americans are not getting enough vitamin D from sunlight or diet. When your skin is exposed to sunshine, it builds vitamin D from the precursor of cholesterol (7-dehydrocholesterol) in the skin cells.
  •  Individuals with fair skin and those who are younger convert sunshine into vitamin D far better than those who are darker-skinned and 70 years and older.
What determines a vitamin D deficiency?

Blood tests are the only way to know if you are deficient in vitamin D.Although standards vary, most experts agree that levels of 25(OH)D below 20 ng/ml (nanograms per milliliter) reflect clear-cut vitamin D inadequacy, while levels between 20 and 30 ng/ml are borderline. Please consult your physician for personalized medical advice. If your doctor has recommended you take a different amount of vitamin D, you should follow their advice.

  • The severity of vitamin D deficiency is divided into mild, moderate, and severe.[18]
  • Mild deficiency: 25-hydroxyvitamin D less than 20 ng/mL
  • Moderate deficiency: 25-hydroxyvitamin D less than 10 ng/mL
  • Severe deficiency: 25-hydroxyvitamin D less than 5 ng/mL
Who needs Vitamin D?

During the autumn and winter, you need to get vitamin D from supplementation or diet  because the sun is not strong enough for the body to make vitamin D. But since it's difficult for people to get enough vitamin D from food alone, everyone should consider daily supplementation of vitamin D during the autumn and winter (September through April/May.)A large portion of the population is at risk of vitamin D deficiency. People who live far from the equator, and those with conditions like liver disease, kidney disease, and celiac, are at a higher risk. The elderly and people with darker skin also fall in this category.

People at risk of vitamin D deficiency or low levels of vitamin D

  • Some people will not make enough vitamin D from sunlight because they have very little or no sunshine exposure. Consider taking daily supplementation of vitamin D throughout the year.
  • are not often outdoors
  • are in an institution like a care home, or spend most days in an office
  • usually wear clothes that cover up most of their skin when outdoors
  • Apply SPF regularly
  • If you have dark skin – for example you have an African, African-Caribbean or south Asian background – you may also not make enough vitamin D from sunlight.
What happens if I take too much vitamin D?

Taking too many vitamin D supplements over a long period of time can cause too much calcium to build up in the body (hypercalcaemia). This can weaken the bones and damage the kidneys and the heart. Do not take more than 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) of vitamin D a day as it could be harmful. If your doctor has recommended you take a different amount of vitamin D, you should follow their advice.

We also use third party testing partners to ensure what is in our patches matches our dosage. You can trust that you are getting the exact dosage on our package when used as instructed (vs pills where absorption will vary from person to person).

Do I still need Vitamin D in the summer?

Even in the summer, it's possible to become deficient in vitamin D. Some reasons why include: Spending more time outdoors, Overestimating how much time you spend in the sun, Wearing sunscreen or clothing that blocks harmful rays, Altitude, and Air pollution.

Why are the vitamin patch minis smaller than the multivitamin patches?

Our minis are smaller as they only contain 2 ingredients, and the daily recommended dosage is smaller.

Where should I apply my barrière patch?

barrière patches should be applied to clean & dry skin. Do not apply patches on your face or  head, and do not apply patches to any area where skin is broken or irritated. Our favorite areas to apply a patch include: inner and outer wrists, upper arm, shoulder blades, collarbone, upper and lower back, hip, thighs, and ankles. Day or night. The time of application has no bearing on the patch’s effectiveness.
